Quel est notre pouvoir sur notre destinée ? De la haute bourgeoisie aux bas-fonds, ce roman initiatique parcourt le monde gay. Au-delà des interrogations sur sa nature, cette quête offre une multitude de rencontres, vers une ouverture à la différence et au bonheur. Le héros se réveille à l’hôpital, à la suite d’une agression sur un lieu de prostitution homosexuelle. Il y cherchait un anéantissement. Sauvé par son ami médecin, il remonte la pente et décide de raconter par écrit sa glissade vers sa destruction, en se référant à un conte chinois. Jérôme nous convie aux rencontres qui vont le façonner : son cousin qui lui révèle son homosexualité, son grand-père qui le pousse à réfléchir sur sa vie, son ami de cœur, Tomas et, malheureusement aussi, le traumatisme d’un viol par son aumônier. Des amitiés de jeunesse suivent, mais l’ouverture à la différence se fera avec Pascale, une transsexuelle avec laquelle il vit un amour absolu, avant d’être dévasté par sa transition. Durant la lente dérive qui va se transformer en une descente aux portes de l’enfer, Jérôme vit des expériences étonnantes. Alors qu’il remonte, il recueille Raphael, un gamin jeté à la rue par son père, activant sa fibre paternelle. Les retrouvailles avec son amour, Tomas, lui permettent de renouer avec Pascale, puis avec sa nourrice, source de sa force de vivre.
